What the developers said

Blizzard's developers on its podcast, panels and streams, newest first. Each line sums up what they said at that moment, and the badge says how it holds up against the game files.

  • Not in the files Hall of Thanes is easy for the Alliance to reach through Ironforge but is not Alliance-exclusive; Blizzard won't say whether a Horde entrance exists.

The files Entrances and faction access are world data and server rules; the client's map files can't settle a hidden entrance.

  • Not in the files Tim Jones: the four Hall of Thanes quests can deck a character out in blues in a single run. Adjustments are already being made and will likely appear in the next beta build. The target is Classic pacing: about one quest blue in Wailing Caverns and about two in Maraudon.

The files Developer statement on plans. The Oct 1 Dev Notes say certain quest rewards were recalibrated.

Mehr Sieglinde, Sep 25 at 1:26:59

  • Partly Hall of Thanes drops a spell-damage dagger. Tim got it from the dungeon's fire elemental boss (also mentioned at 3232s).

The files Hall of Thanes has a boss named 'Infurnus' (encounter 3495), which fits a fire elemental. The dagger drop is server-side loot.

World of Warcraft, Sep 24 at 3:27

  • Partly Too many blues come too early: four Hall of Thanes quests can deck you out in blues in one run. In the next beta build some dungeon quests give only XP and gold, and rewards are consolidated so you get one blue instead of four. The target is classic pacing: about one quest blue for Wailing Caverns and about two for Maraudon.

The files Dev notes Oct 1 (build 70170) confirm 'Certain quest rewards have also been recalibrated' and that dungeon-quest bonus XP was halved. The four-blue Hall of Thanes example and the WC/Maraudon pacing targets are server-side reward data.

  • Matches the files Hall of Thanes, one of Forever's nine new dungeons, is a level 13-18 Alliance 'sister dungeon' to Ragefire Chasm. It lies in the depths of old Ironforge, filling the gap where the Alliance never had a dungeon in that range.

The files Hall of Thanes (map 3065) is 13-18 in blue post 30052350, Group Finder 1984 = 13-20, and ContentTuning 7000 = 13. Ragefire Chasm Group Finder = 13-18. The official recap says 'the Hall of Thanes beneath Ironforge'.

What creators found, checked

From beta videos by bigger WoW creators. Each line sums up what the creator said at that moment of the video, and the badge says how it holds up against the game files.

  • Changed since In Hall of Thanes, mobs gave a level-12 Mage only about 15 XP each. Almost all the XP came from the quest turn-ins at the end. One run with all the quests took Xaryu from about level 12.5 to 14.5, so one run for the quests is good XP but spamming the dungeon is not.

The files Official Oct 1 dev notes (build 70170): 'Dungeon quests now reward 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values', which confirms dungeon quests carried a large XP bonus before that build. Xaryu's 12.5 to 14.5 from HoT quests predates the cut. Mob XP (~15) is server-side.

  • Matches the files Hall of Thanes first boss Faldrim Anvilmar puts Anvilmar's Curse on his main target: 20% slower attack and cast speed for 10 minutes. Remove it with a decurse if you can.

The files Anvilmar's Curse 1292602: attack speed (aura 319) and casting speed (aura 65) -20%, Bleed-mechanic immunity (aura 77) and Poison dispel immunity (aura 41), 10 min, 40 yd, DispelType Curse. The tooltip reads: 'reducing attack speed and casting speed by 20% but also making them immune to Poison and Bleed effects for 10 min.'

  • Matches the files In Hall of Thanes, a hunter shooting a Seaforium blasting charge next to Dark Iron mobs detonates it and knocks the mobs away. The charge is highlighted in yellow.

The files Seaforium Blasting Powder 1291346: 'inflicting 49 to 51 Fire damage to everyone within 8 yds' plus a knockback effect (SpellEffect 98), so it hits players as well as mobs. The yellow highlight is a UI detail.

    Esfand, Sep 23 at 13:31

  • Partly Hall of Thanes entrance: in Ironforge's throne room (King Magni) take the left door, behind the Tier 0.5 questline NPC. A cobwebbed ramp leads down into Old Ironforge, a huge cavern with crystals, ruined buildings and lava below. The entrance quest NPCs stand near the instance portal at the bottom of a winding path.

The files Official What's Next recap: 'the Hall of Thanes beneath Ironforge'. The route through the throne room and the cavern details can't be checked (no UiMap for map 3065).

  • Partly In Hall of Thanes, patrols can join pulls, and the final boss is flanked by two tethered golems that shredded TheoryWise's Paladin tank, who lacked Consecration. TheoryWise sums up the dungeon's mechanics as individually easy but punishing.

The files The final encounter is Durgen Dirgehammer (3496, order 3000; kill statistic 63573). Golems and patrols aren't in client data.

    TheoryWise, Sep 29 at 22:12

  • Partly Hall of Thanes trash: Dark Iron Looters are the most dangerous (Sinister Strike plus nature poison procs on every hit; kill first). Bloodhound Runts' disease raises physical damage taken. Dark Iron Engineers throw ground-targeted dynamite you can fully dodge, and Summoners cast Fireball and summon a fire add.

The files Two new NPC spells fit: Infected Bite 1290060 ('15 Nature damage every 10 sec and increases the Physical damage it takes by 5'), matching the Bloodhound Runt disease, and Throw Dynamite 1294260 (2 s cast, 'all enemies in a selected area'), matching dodgeable dynamite. Which mobs cast them, the Looter poison and the summoner add are server-side.

Icy Veins Gaming, Sep 25 at 6:06

  • Partly The scariest Hall of Thanes pull for low levels is a pack of four, including three Dark Iron Looters, past Magmatus. Explosive barrels behind them deal about 25% damage to enemies hit, and you should CC a Looter if you can.

The files The 2nd boss's encounter name is Infurnus (3495); the loot calls it Magmatus (Fang of Magmatus 271095). Hall of Thanes also has a 4th encounter, 'Plunder' (3494, order 2500). Pack composition and barrel damage are server-side.

Icy Veins Gaming, Sep 25 at 7:34

  • Partly Hall of Thanes final boss Durgen Dirgehammer casts an area Fear at 50% health. Clear the whole room first, or pull him and his two golems through the entry door, which closes behind them, so feared players don't run into extra mobs.

The files Boss name is Durgen Dirgehammer (encounter 3496). The 50% fear and door behaviour are server-side.

Icy Veins Gaming, Sep 25 at 8:54

  • Partly Horde route to Hall of Thanes: boat from Steamwheedle Port (Tanaris) to the Riverglades, then run west and north through the Badlands, Loch Modan and Dun Morogh to Ironforge, then death-run past the guards. The Riverglades connects overland to the Badlands.

The files Official recap: 'Powderfuse Port ties directly into the new Steamwheedle route' and the Riverglades borders the Badlands. Steamwheedle Port (area 977, Tanaris) exists. The Powderfuse taxi nodes 3274/3275 have no faction map flags, which fits a boat endpoint. The death-run route is player advice.

Icy Veins Gaming, Sep 25 at 1:27

  • Partly Hall of Thanes is reached through Old Ironforge, which is now open to players. Dwarf NPCs there, including a Lorekeeper, give the dungeon quests ('strange noises... from deep within the vaults'), and the rewards are blue items.

The files The official recap places the Hall of Thanes 'beneath Ironforge'. Forever has a rebuilt Ironforge WMO (20884) with areas such as 'Vault of Ironforge', 'The Forlorn Cavern' and 'The High Seat'. All HoT boss loot is rare (270227-270261, 271095-271098). The quest NPCs and text are server-side.
